Permanent under chin fat reduction
KYBELLA is an injectable that can be placed into the submental fat (area below the chin) that will destroy fat cells in this area, thereby reducing fullness and appearance of what some consider a “double chin.” It contains deoxycholic acid which is a bile acid that acts to break down fat cells. This results in the improved appearance of the side profile to better define the upper neck and jawline. Once these fat cells are destroyed, results are expected to be permanent in most cases.
Care Instructions
Pre-Treatment Instructions For KYBELLA® Injections Before Treatment
- You may not be treated if you are pregnant or nursing, have difficulty swallowing, a nerve injury, weakness in the lower face, or have an infection in the area. Inform your medical provider if you are on blood thinners or have had procedures or surgery on your lower face or neck.
- Avoid aspirin for ten days, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), other non-steroidal medications (Aleve) and Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, and fish oil supplements for five days prior to the procedure because these medications will make you more likely to bruise. If you have been prescribed one of these medications, ask your doctor before you stop taking it. Tylenol will not cause bruising and is preferred for the week prior to treatment. To avoid possible discomfort, you may take 1g of acetaminophen (i.e., Tylenol) or NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen) one hour prior to your scheduled appointment.
- Plan your procedure so you can have four full days before returning to work or important social engagements.
- Have ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and Zyrtec (an antihistamine) available at home for discomfort and itching that may result from the procedure.
After Treatment
- After your treatment, you should expect swelling and redness. You may also experience bruising, pain, numbness, and induration. This will normally last less than five days and for some patients, may last up to 14 days. If the symptoms continue beyond ten days or if other reactions occur, please contact the office.
- You may elect to ice the area post-treatment but must do so very carefully. Use an ice pack with the fabric against the skin, or wrap a soft plastic ice pack in a thin wet towel. Apply the ice pack for approximately 15 seconds on and 15 seconds off. Icing too vigorously can cause frostbite and scarring. You may apply a cold compress to the area for 20 minutes per hour and do this hourly for up to three days.
- Do not participate in strenuous activity for three days following treatment
- Sleep with your head elevated on at least two or preferably three pillows.
- Do not scratch, pick or traumatize the area in any way. Do not massage or manipulate the injection site.
- You may apply your normal skin care regimen and sunscreen normally.

KYBELLA Before and After
FAQ's
How is KYBELLA Administered?
A trained healthcare provider will assess the region of fullness under the chin and will mark the area to be treated. Each treatment will consist of multiple small injections of KYBELLA into the subcutaneous fat layer under the chin. Treatment generally takes about 30 minutes to complete.
How Many Treatments Are Needed for KYBELLA?
In general, most clients take 3 -6 treatments spaced 1 month apart to achieve the desired look. Your health care provider will provide ongoing care and monitoring to determine how many will be needed on an individualized basis.
Is KYBELLA Right For Me?
KYBELLA may help if you are bothered or unhappy with fullness or fat under the chin. Some clients feel this accumulation of fat makes them appear older and wish to improve this without surgery. If you have tried diet and exercise but still suffer from under chin fullness, KYBELLA may be a good option to improve this.
What Should I Expect After Having KYBELLA?
After receiving KYBELLA injections, you will expect to have moderate, but temporary swelling, bruising, redness, or numbness of the treatment area. This typically resolves over the course of several days. In rare cases there have been reports of muscle weakness, tissue necrosis, sores, or difficulty swallowing. Your health care provider will discuss what to expect during recovery and will be available to monitor your care.
