Neuromodulators (Botox®)
A neuromodulator is the medical term for brands such as Botox®, Dysport, and Jeuveau. These brands contain botulinum toxin, which is created by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. This toxin has been processed and manufactured to provide a controlled dose that can be injected into muscles where its mechanism of action starts.
Care Instructions
- This treatment is not recommended if you have an important event within two weeks of injection due to potential for bruising.
- Avoid herbal supplements such as Ginko, green tea, and anti-inflammatories of any kind for two weeks before and following treatment to limit bruising.
- For the first 5-6 hours following Botox®, remain upright and avoid lying flat.
- Do not participate in activities that include heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, or straining for 2-3 hours (it takes approximately 2-3 hours for Botox® to bind to the nerve, and you do not want to increase circulation during that time).
- Do not rub, touch, or manipulate Botox® for 6 hours.
- Make-up may be applied gently before leaving the office. Remember to wipe up and away from your eyes or brows. Avoid irritating products for 24 hours following Botox®.
- Bruising in the area injected is normal and often expected, especially if treated around the eyes. Bruising can last up to several weeks. Using/taking Arnica may help diminish bruising.
- It may take up to 12 days for Botox® to take full effect.
- A follow-up visit at ten days to two weeks is suggested to assess results for subsequent treatments, particularly if you are a first-time client. If full correction is not achieved, you will need to purchase additional Botox® for injection.
- Re-treatment is typically needed between 3-4 months. Regular injections usually yield a longer-lasting Botox® result.
- If your upper lip was treated, you will not be able to drink through a straw, whistle, or enunciate some words for approximately two weeks.
- Although rare, infection in the injected area is possible. Signs of infection may include redness and tenderness in the infected area and fever. Should you develop an infection, antibiotics may be necessary. Please contact us should you have any concerns.

Botulinum toxin improves the appearance of wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the muscle it is injected into, thereby preventing the contraction of that muscle. This prevents the overlaying skin from wrinkling and developing imprinted lines over time. When our face animates and moves, these wrinkled areas (most commonly between the eyebrows, across the forehead, and on the sides of the eyes) eventually create imprinted wrinkles, which can appear even during rest. Neuromodulators can be injected into the muscles in these areas to prevent expressions that form these lines.
The decision of when to start neuromodulators will vary from person to person and how strong your facial muscles are. Some people have very strong facial muscles, which can develop lines and wrinkles earlier than others.
The best way to view the use of a neuromodulator is to PREVENT the formation of imprinted lines in the skin. As the skin creases with expression, these creases get deeper and deeper until they become permanent. Starting your neuromodulator treatments early can prevent these creases from becoming permanent. If you already have imprinted lines, it can also help improve them by allowing the skin to rest and repair where these creases are.
Neuromodulators can be expected to last about three months before they gradually wear off and muscle function returns to normal. An important factor to note with the duration of neuromodulators is the total dose given. We must remember that the dose affects the duration of the medication. If a smaller dose than recommended is given, the results can be expected to wear off sooner. Your medical provider will discuss the appropriate dose needed to achieve the desired effect and duration you wish to achieve.
